The Bahamas Comes To Miami This Weekend

The exotic climes of the Bahamas may be an hour’s plane ride away from Miami, but this weekend, you don’t need a plane to experience the flavours of this colourful place, as Miami prepares to celebrate all things Bahamian when the Miami/Bahamas Goombay Festival comes to town. The Coconut Grove festival will begin in true celebratory Bahamian style, with a free party kicking off the festivities on Friday at Tobacco Road, where the Sunshine Junkanoo Band will play traditional music and also resident DJ Oski will drop some reggae and hip-hop beats at the party.

The band will be back again, to entertain the expectant crowds on Saturday and Sunday at the street fair which takes place in Coconut Grove, it is here that the highlight festival dance will take place. Traditional African junkanoo dancing will take to the streets in this carnival atmosphere – expect eye-popping colourful clothes and traditional  music ranging from cow bells, brass horns, drums and whistles which will emanate through the crowds.  The festival will see more than 100 street vendors bringing their slice of the Bahamas to Miami, selling different handmade arts and crafts, clothing and of course the delicious Bahamian food which ranges from fish and grits, fish stew and conch fritters.
